Beginners and Drums: The Perfect Pair

Conventional wisdom says piano is the place to start a musical journey, and for good reason––well, reasonS, really, which we’ll explore in another post. But piano isn’t the only game in town.

Let’s talk drums.

Drums make an excellent first instrument. Really, they do! Some reasons why:

RHYTHM. The understanding of rhythm gained by just an introduction to drums will serve any student well, whether they become full-blown percussionists or fall in love with other instruments. And don’t get us started on rhythm and math, which play off and strengthen each other like Keith and Mick.

MOTOR SKILLS. Drums don’t require the fine motor skills that guitar or even piano demand. That more accessible entry point makes drums a great fit for younger kids or anyone who is still working on building those muscles.

RAT-TA-TAT-TAT. Part of what we want to do is make kids fall in love with the sheer joy of creating music, and y’all, even the shyest, most reserved players can’t stop smiling when they hit that snare.
